  • A means for the department to attract and support talented young faculty, in their early years, who willadd tremendous value to the department and CU Boulder.
  • Investment in current and cutting-edge research.
  • Overall department needs that provide flexible funding to address everyday challenges and take on new and exciting opportunities that allow the department to flourish.

As you consider what might be most meaningful for you in supporting Biochemistry at CU Boulder, you can also choose to make quick, and very impactful gifts, by selecting one of the following options. ALL gift amounts are valued by Biochemistry and we appreciate your willingness to be involved and in a sense, pay-it-forward!

A New Fund! S.C.O.P.E. = Middle School Science Training

S.C.O.P.E. is short for Science Community Outreach Program and Education and aims to increase science identity and access for middle school students by bringing together CU Boulder student volunteers from a variety of degree programs including Biochemistry; Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology; Chemistry; Neuroscience; Integrated Physiology (IPHY); Psychology; Math; Education; Spanish; and more. These student volunteers then go out to local community middle schools to teach lessons around microscopy, chemistry and other natural science areas and encourage the students to make hypotheses about natural phenomena and test them - all while asking questions and engaging in a fun learning experience. For instance, in order to teach students about acids and bases, we bring in some common liquids (orange juice, detergent, vinegar, etc.) and the job of the student volunteers is to encourage the students to predict the pHs before testing it themselves on litmus paper.

The program has three core goals:

  1. Increase interest in science at the pre-high school level with an emphasis in service to schools with historically underrepresented students.
  2. Provide a unique opportunity for students to meet working scientists from the University of Colorado at Boulder and perform hands-on science experiments.
  3. Offer teaching and classroom opportunities at the pre-high school student level for staff, post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students within the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Meet a Scientist, Be a Scientist” acts as the organization’s motto and primary mission for all interactions with students.

Your support will:

  • provide materials for those classes,
  • provide recruiting materials including training sessions (pizza, t-shirts, and more),
  • and help with transportation and other costs.

Biochemistry Research Endowment Fund

CU Boulder Biochemistry is known for ground-breaking research, which has often led to entirely new fields of science. The department seeks to build its endowment in research to enable funding for exciting new research programs where federal support is not possible - and where many charitable foundations shy away from early-stage inquiry due to its inherent high-risk and high-rewardnature.

Biochemistry Engagement Fund

The department often has need for funds to:

  • support the recruitment of highly sought after faculty,
  • to use for appreciation events like scholarship dinners to allow benefactors and their scholarship recipients to meet,
  • and for department activities to enhance faculty and student experiences.

These funds are explicitly used for entertainment and are separated to ensure all policies are strictly adhered to as we recruit, celebrate and provide fun experiences alongside rigorous academics.
